An Opportunity

Keheley’s Giving Trees 2009

Student Council and the Outreach Committee are sponsoring a Holiday Gift Project to assist local families. We will have a holiday tree in the front atrium with ornaments that have a "gift wish" written on them. Parents and students may pick a paper ornament off the tree and buy the “gift wish” written on that ornament.

The “gift wishes” we will be requesting are items such as: hats, gloves, mittens, scarves, socks, boys /girl’s underwear, children’s books and children’s movies.
All items must be new and unwrapped.
All items must be donated by December 15th Tuesday.
Thank you for your donations, you have helped a family in need!!

December News

The students are getting excited about two Performing Arts field trips in the month of December. Please plan appointments around these two dates, as we will be out of the building. On December 4th, we will be attending the Nutcracker from 10:45-1:45. Second graders will also be attending the Safety Village on December 15th from 10:00-1:00. Permission and money have been collected for both of these out of school field trips, everyone is good to go. It's a busy time of year!

Our Holiday Lunch is scheduled for Thursday, December 10th from 12:22-12:52. We would love for you to join us in the cafeteria for a special lunch at this time. No special reservations are needed.

Math Alert!

Super math sites are now available for review and practice at home.

Please look at "Math Websites" on the right side of the blog. Click on "Math Workstations" for second grade activities that match our standards throughout the year...yes, the whole year! This is a site you will want to visit often.

You will also want to visit the "All Aboard" site for subtraction with regrouping. The children have found this standard to be very challenging and would really benefit from daily practice.

Keheley's Annual Book Exchange

Children’s Book Exchange 2009!
It’s time for Keheley’s annual Children’s Book Exchange!
Do you have some good books at home that you’re finished reading? Would you like to trade those books for someone else’s gently-used books? You’ll be able to do that SOON in the media center! Here’s what to do:
Find a few books at home that you want to trade. Children’s books only, please! (Remember to get a parent’s permission.)
Bring them to the media center any day before Nov. 11. You’ll get a coupon. You may bring as many books as you want, but coupons can be used for no more than ten books. Note: if you bring picture books, you will choose picture books. Bring chapter books, choose chapter books.
Don’t lose your coupon!
Bring your coupon to the media center on Wednesday, Nov. 11 (grades K, 1 & 2) or Thursday, Nov. 12 (grades 3,4 & 5). Listen to KNN for times.
Choose some “new” books to take home.
Read your books!
Happy Reading!

All Star Readers

Our class is already enjoying the benefits of independent, shared and guided reading this year. Reading is a big part of our second grade day! Students are enjoying reading A.R. books from the Media Center on their individual levels and completing contracts each week. Contract one went home last week. As you can see, we're already on our way to being "All Star Readers".

We're excited about Keheley's new book campaign this year. The theme is "Be a Reading All Star". Our goal is to read and respond to 6 books by October 6th, and 25 books by year end. Our class is already well on our way to accomplishing this reading goal. Students are encouraged to wear sports themed gear on Friday advertising their favorite team for the campaign kick off. No hats please. Let's get fired up about making great gains in reading this year!

Welcome Back

We've had a wonderful start to our school year in second grade. Our first week back went so smoothly mastering our new schedule, classroom routine, behavior code, and much more! We plunged right into learning and the kids didn't skip a beat. Be sure to ask your children about the special reptile visitor we had in class last week!

Remember to send in a snack daily. Agenda pads need to be checked and initialed nightly. Please encourage your children to take initiative for this new second grade responsibility. We're looking forward to meeting with you at Keheley's Open House next Tuesday, August 25th.

Thank You,
Susan Hulse & Erica Fokens
